BASIC TERMINOLOGY

*Explanations taken from AHA website*
  •  Wort [wert] - In simple terms, wort is what beer is before the yeast gets to work on converting the fermentable sugars into alcohol and CO2. After fermentation is complete and before serving, the liquid is actually uncarbonated beer.

  • Pitching (to pitch) - When homebrewers use the phrase “pitching” or “to pitch” they are referring to the process of adding the yeast to the sweet wort.

  • Fermentation - Here is one of the simplest yet accurate explanations of the fermentation process: The yeast eats the sugars from the malt and then excretes alcohol and carbon dioxide.

  • Gravity - [Specific Gravity (SG) / Final Gravity (FG).  When discussing gravity, it is important to understand the differences and relationships between specific gravity and final gravity. The measurement of the density of wort/beer, both before and after fermentation, allow for an indication of alcohol level among other things.

  • Racking - While the definition refers directly to transferring fermented beer, homebrewers typically use “racking” as the term for transferring the liquid, fermented or not, at any point of the post-boil brewing process.

GETTING STARTED

FOR FIRST TIME EXTRACT BREWERS

Many first time brewers start by purchasing a starter kit. A kit typically comes with all the ingredients and supplies you need to brew your first batch of beer. Be sure to check your kitchen cabinets before purchasing any equipment. You probably already have a few of these items at home. Below is a list of equipment you'll need to start brewing.

  • Brew Kettle - Boil Pot (Same as the kind you make spaghetti in.

  • Heat Source - Stove Top or Propane Burner

  • Stirring Spoon - Preferably with a long handle.

  • Measuring Cup

  • Thermometer

  • Unscented Cleanser (PBW)

  • Sanitizer (StarSan)

  • Fermentor (Plastic bucket or glass/plastic carboy)

  • Airlock

  • Bung for Airlock (if using glass or plastic carboy)

  • Racking Cane

  • Bottling Bucket

  • Bottle Filler

  • Bottles

  • Caps

  • Bottle Capper
